Coding
I have three weeks between jobs to slow down. I tried to keep away from the computer as much as possible, but with limited success. Here’s what I’ve been working on:
Rebuilding this website and adding content. I’m hoping to have it ready for regular writing by the time I start my new job at the end of May. If you’re curious about how this site is built, check out the colophon .
Preparing a presentation for Leiria Tech Talks about Nix & NixOS . I’m planning to use Slidev for the slides. Since Slidev doesn’t natively support running Nix in its code runner, I’ve been experimenting with running Nix code in the browser using WebAssembly. For working examples of Nix in the browser, check out Tour of Nix and Tvix’s Bolt .
Job change
I have left MetaCell . The company has the best business management I’ve experienced and is a great place to work. I’m grateful for the opportunity and wish them all the best!
I’ll be starting a new role as Senior Open-source Engineer at Siemens on May 22nd, 2025. I don’t fully understand what my role will encompass yet. From what I’ve understood, I’ll be:
- Advocating for open source culture
- Maintaining code.siemens.com and, whenever needed, contributing to Gitlab upstream
- Contributing to strategic open source software projects
- Improving developer experience, ensuring developers have a stable work environment across different devices. Hopefully I will be able to experiment with Nix ♥
Moving
I recently had to leave my place in Aveiro. For now, I’ve moved back to my childhood village of Porto de Mós .
The future feels a bit fuzzy right now. I’ll be legally required to work from Portugal, so my girlfriend and I are considering either finding a place to settle down or embracing the digital nomad lifestyle and moving between different locations for a while.
We’ve already gotten a taste of the nomadic life, enjoying two weeks in Sardinia and a few days in Casablanca .
Climbing
I’ve been lured into the world of bouldering and climbing. I don’t have the core strength or monkey skills to move vertically, but I’ve been enjoying the challenge and having fun with it.
After two months of climbing, my bouldering shoes have gotten looser than ideal. I’m constantly slipping and can’t apply enough pressure to prevent it. I’m thinking about buying new ones. If you have any recommendations, feel free to send me an email .
